KELAB Golf Perkhidmatan Awam (KGPA) in Bukit Kiara held a charity golf tournament last weekend to raise funds for the proposed four-storey primary school block in memory of Brother Ultan Paul.

Paul was the catalyst in the formation of the St Michael’s Institution (SMI) Klang Valley Alumni and was the school’s longest serving principal.

About 120 golfers took part in the event including former students of SMI, Ipoh. The Challenge Trophy was donated by Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, a former student of SMI.

SMI head of publicity, Jeanette Khoo, said the main purpose of the event was to raise RM20,000 for the school block project expected to cost RM150,000. Each golfer paid an entry fee of RM250.

The tournament, played over 18 holes, offered a Dunlop Slazenger complete golf set and a set of low radial Silverstone tyres for a hole-in-one at any par-three.

Khoo said a mock cheque for RM20,000 would be handed over to Brother Vincent Corkery, the present principal of SMI, during the alumni’s annual charity dinner at the Tropicana Golf and Country Club ballroom on Saturday.

The highlight of the dinner will be the presentation of “The Caring Michaelian of the Year” and “The Most Outstanding Michaelian of the Year” awards to the winners.

Many of the school’s illustrious former students will be attending the dinner including Dr Lim and Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, who is SMI’s adviser. “Evergreen Michaellian” is this year’s theme.

Khoo said the Klang Valley Alumni, formed last year, now had 305 members.

The alumni is now on a membership drive to sign up more members in the Klang Valley.

Those interested in becoming members of SMI can call 03-7957 7124 (Helen Yip). Tickets for the annual dinner are priced at RM80.
