THE one thing Xaverians have in common, besides love for their alma mater, is a love for their teachers.

About 100 Xaverians and well-wishers gathered at the MingCourt Vista Hotel Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday night to celebrate the 85th birthday of a man who is indeed much loved by them--Bro Michael Jacques, who was the principal of the St Xavier's Institution in Penang from 1956 to 1961.

Ex-students from the St Paul's Institution in Seremban and St Xavier's in Malacca also turned up.

The dinner was organised by the Xaverian Club of Kuala Lumpur (XCKL). The guests included Old Xavierians Association patron Dr Goh Cheng Teik, Old Paulians Association president Tan Sri Chan Choong Tak, former St Xavier's Penang principal Bro Lawrence Spitzig, former Bro Visitor of La Sallian schools in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia Bro Matthew Liew, The Star's managing editor II Wong Sulong, and XCKL president Ng Soon Hong.

Besides his many contributions to the school, Bro Jacques was also instrumental in the setting up of the St Xavier's branch school at Jalan Brother James in Pulau Tikus and the La Salle School in Air Itam, both in Penang. And he did not stop sharing his wisdom that night in the company of his former charges, who are now respectable citizens.

"Everyone has a place on this earth to accomplish a mission, but not all would be able to comprehend their mission. "It is important to carry out our duties with responsibility, and once we do this, we would have fulfilled our mission," said the Kuching- born educationist.

Ng said the XCKL which was founded in 1984, now had 500 members.

"We are looking forward to celebrating St Xavier's Institution's (in Penang) 150th anniversary next year," he added.
