ImageFifty scholarships worth RM20,000 apiece are being offered by Mr. Koon Yew Yin to help the financially challenged students to study finance and accountancy at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Kampar, Perak in the next academic year. Mr. Koon is an Old Boy of a Lasallian school.

Koon, who has given assistance to more than 40 poor students in the past is a humble philanthropist and he keeps a low profile. Therefore, it is not surprising that not many people have heard of him.

The man expects nothing in return from those he had supported except for them to help young people in similar circumstances when they graduated and are in a financial position to do so. He also hopes that they will all stay back in Malaysia to lend their talents to help build our beloved nation.  He regretted the great brain drain of the creme de la creme among our youngsters to Singapore, Australia, Great Britain, America and other countries, a resultant of biased governmental policies and implementation.

The scholarships
ImageThe scholarship is for study in finance and accountancy conducted at the Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Kampar, Perak Darul Redzuan for the academic year 2010. Each scholarship is worth RM20,000. This amount should be enough for the students to cover the cost for the first year foundation course and the first semester of the degree course in finance and accountancy until he or she secures the PTPTN loan.

(Note: the PTPTN Government loan is given to all students irrespective of race and financial position who are doing a recognised degree course.

Qualifications
The scholarship is open to Malaysian students of all races who are:

      a/. Current SPM holders.

b/. Students presently attending Form 5 classes and who will be
Sitting for the SPM examinations at the end of this year.

c/. From students whose combined family income does not exceed
two thousand ringgit (RM2,000.00) per month.

How to apply
Each application for the scholarship must include the following:

      1. A certified copy of his/her SPM certificate or a certified copy
of the forecast results if he/she is only sitting for the SPM at
         the end of this year.

      2. Details of his/her family income.

The application together with the above documents are to be sent to Mr. Koon Yew Yin at this email address:

It is the responsibility of the applicants to apply directly to UTAR for admission to the course of study.

UTAR accepts forecast results for admission for the next academic year which starts in January 2010. Applicants are advised to check with UTAR regarding the procedures and datelines for admission.

ImageSelection of successful applicants will be based more on their financial need and not merely on academic achievement. Koon’s noble act will no doubt prompt more illustrious La Sallians and other philanthropists to come forward to help the many deserving students who, due to the lack of fund, are being deprived of the chance to build a better life for themselves and their loved ones. Can we count on you to help more students?
