War-time Experience of My Life by Bro. Datuk Lawrence Spitzig FSC Print E-mail

ImageBrother Datuk Lawrence Spitzig left a legacy which is richly embedded in the minds of those whose lives he had touched. They will forever hold him dear in their hearts.

ImageI got to know Bro. Lawrence well when, in 1998 I became grossly involved in projects to promote the Lasallian Cause.  As a member of the De La Salle Advisory Board then, I spent much time with fellow Board members helping to transform the De La Salle Institute (then an English Language Institute) into a college for tertiary education. The Brothers’ residence is just on top of the Institute. Thus, we often received invitations to have tea with the Brothers of the St. John's community namely, Bro. Andrew Loke. Bro. Mathew Liew, Bro. Cassian Pappu. Bro. Lawrence Spitzig would surely be around if he was not busy darting around the town working his magic for those who needed help. These were precious moments that we hold dearly in our hearts.

ImageBrother Lawrence, as with all La Salle Brothers, lived a humble, simple life that epitomizes dedication and commitment to his vocation as a La Salle educator. He often talked about the disadvantaged kids in Kampung Songsogon, Sabah where he initiated and set up a rural school for these “street urchins” with the help of friends and alumni. Undoubtedly this was his pet project in his golden years.

He had a sharp memory and fondly recalled the war-years he spent as a young Brother at the St. John’s community in Kuala Lumpur during the Japanese occupation of Malaya. At our request, he recounted the events of this era on paper under the caption: War-time Experience of My Life – PRE-CLINk.  This article was first published in the e-Lasallian Family website in February, 2006. It is now refreshed and re-uploaded for the benefit of readers which missed reading it earlier. The article comes in 4 parts and can be found under the Archive Section or by clicking the following link or copy and paste the link on your browser:

We have also put up twelve photos on the final journey of our dearly departed Brother Lawrence – courtesy of Johanian Edward Chan.  They can be viewed at the photo gallery at the top of the Homepage.
