The Board of Old Boys (BOBs) of Lasallian schools in Myanmar came together at the Mandalay Room of the Chatrium Hotel on May 29th to make preparations for a reunion dinner to be held on 13th November to celebrate the arrival of the first Brothers in Burma (now Myanmar).
They left school in 1964. No more students came after them as all the six Lasallian schools were nationalized under the military regime. Yet, they remain resolute in keeping the Lasllian Torch burning bright for the past forty six years in spite of trying circumstances. The youngest is now 54 years of age, with many of them having moved on to different parts of the globe. Yet, they commit themselves to upkeep the Lasallian values and meet at least once a year to discuss/implement programmes that help the underprivileged in their homeland, irrespective of colour or creed. This must surely set the benchmark that Lasallians everywhere would want to emulate. They deserve our highest admiration.

The upcoming reunion dinner in November is being organized to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Brothers’ arrival in Myanmar in 1860. It is one of the many activities of the Sesqui Centennial Anniversary celebrations.
Dr. Robin Chan, a member of the BOBs assured the meeting chaired by Han Tun Maung that the visa for Brother Superior plus one other person to attend the anniversary celebrations shall be granted on his guarantee to the Myanmar authorities at the Embassy of Union of Myanmar for Italy in Rome that Bro. Alvaro Echieverria will make no public appearances at podium and will not involve himself in politics and the like during his visit.
In wanting to have a huge turnout at the dinner, the meeting decided to subsidize more than half of the dinner cost and will also provide board and lodging at the YMCA, Yangon for fellow alumni who are financially-challenged. They are soliciting funds for the purpose - as the Executive Secretary, Win Than Oo humorously puts it, “We must continuously sing the ABBA’s song: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY”. Even at this early stage, many loyal Old Boys and well-wishers have stepped forward to donate to the event.
Programmes planned include visits to the OldLa SalleSchool, Twante and to the De La Salle Education Centre at Hle Dan; football matches and tug-of-wars are also in the pipeline. Surplus funds and proceeds from the sales of souvenir items will be donated to the La Salle Education Centre of which Bro. John Ling FSC is the Director.
The Chairman expressed hope that members of the La Sallian Family throughout the world, particularly those from Malaysia will lend their support by participating in the Sesqui Centennial Anniversary Celebrations. "They will witness our everlasting La Sallian Spirit and hospitality”, he added.
