SXI 160th Anniversary Dinner and De La Salle in Asia Print E-mail

ImageThey came … they educate … they touch hearts. This, in a nut shell summarizes the courageous story of the La Salle Brothers in Asia for the past 160 years. Resolute in their aim to enlighten the ‘downtrodden and poor’ in regions where education was a luxury only for the rich, they set sail for the Far East, a land that was totally alien to them.

ImageThree Brothers landed in Malaysia in 1852 and planted the seed of holistic education in Penang by establishing the St. Xavier’s Institution. They set up more schools over the years. In Malaysia alone the number mushroomed to no less than 60 by 1970. They won over the hearts of the students, their parents, teachers and the public.  Their reputation grew and they soon made their presence felt in the neigbhouring countries as well.

Their legacy withstood the tests of time. But, it was not plain sailing all the way as they faced many difficulties. As the “winds of change” swept across Myanmar and Malaysia in 1965 and 1969 respectively, they had no choice but to hand over the management of all their schools to the Administration with themselves playing a minor role on the sideline.

2012 will mark the 160th year of the Brothers’ work in Asia. All who passed through the portal of a Brothers’ School have very good reasons to rejoice and celebrate. Events for the anniversary celebrations are being planned throughout the year by the Organizing Committee which is chaired by Mr. Neoh Dian Bin with Bro. Anthony Rogers (Director for LEAD, Malaysia) and  Dato’ Bro. Charles Levin as advisors. Mr. James Koay is the Secretary to the Committee.

The anniversary celebrations will be soft-launched on 6th January, 2012 with a charity week being held at the three SXI campuses in Penang. According to Mr. Neoh, the key events for the year are set for March 31st and December 15th.

1. Dinner in honour of the Brothers - 31 March, 2012

35 La Salle Brothers from the Asia-Pacific Region will arrive in Penang from 27th March 2012 to 1st April 2012. A dinner in their honour will be held in the evening. Several venues have been proposed, among them, the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion (a heritage site) or one of the hotels closeby SXI. Though details of the evening has not been finalized at this stage, the organizers assure all that it will be an evening of unforgettable solidarity and camaraderie. It is expected that members from all Lasallian alumni associations in Malaysia and in the Aisa-Pacific region will participate.

Earlier in the same day there will other programmes - Mini KOK by the students, cheques presentations and an exhibition on the work of the De Lasalle Brothers in Asia – courtesy of the La Salle Centre, Ipoh.

2. Home-coming Dinner at SXI  - 15 December, 2012

ImageA Home-coming buffet-style dinner will be held on 15 December, 2012 at the St. Xavier's Institution, Penang where Old Boys/Girls of the school, from near and far will return to the Alma Mater to renew ties. A similar Home-coming dinner was held in 2002 to celebrate the 150th anniversary. It was most successful. A  good number of fellow-LaSallians from the different Brothers’ schools in the land also participated ... some came from as far as Japan.

The Organizing Committee therefore appeal to all Xaverians, Lasallians and well-wishers to come forward to give their commitments in one form or another. One could help to sponsor an event or make a direct donation. Cheques to be written in favour of “St. Xavier’s Institution For Mission Account” and sent to:
