From the time of its Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools has been governed by 26 Superiors. The central administration of the De La Salle Christian Brothers operates at its Generalate in Rome under the leadership of Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría, the Superior General. The structure of the central government is quite simple. As our Rule states, "Responsibility for the central government of the Institute is entrusted by the General Chapter to the Brother Superior General". He is assisted by a permanent Council known as the General Council and has a Generalate Staff of more than thirty Brothers and lay persons..
The General Council is currently made up of eight Brothers: the Superior General, the Vicar General and six General Councilors, elected by the General Chapter or appointed by the Superior General. {mospag
The Brothers are divided into Districts which constitute the local government of the Institute. Each District is headed by a Brother Visitor. In many religious orders in the Catholic church, the title of the person in this position is Provincial, a title which we also use in some parts of the world. For administrative purposes, we have divided the world into 11 administrative Regions. The Region is not a structure of government, but a means of coordination and collaboration between sectors of the Institute which choose to join together. The General Councillors have responsibility for specific Regions in the Institute as determined by the Superior General.
